Arrival

Arrival by car

The IRF is located on the North Campus of the TU Dortmund, near the freeway junction Dortmund West, where the Sauerland line A 45 (Frankfurt-Dortmund) crosses the Ruhrschnellweg B 1 / A 40. To the west, there is thus a connection to the dense freeway network of the Ruhr area and beyond to the regions of the Lower Rhine or the Netherlands. To the east, the B 1 leads through Dortmund in the direction of Unna, where it connects with highways to Bremen, Hanover/Berlin and Kassel. To the north, the A 45 ends after a few kilometers at the A 2, which leads to the Kamener Kreuz interchange on the one hand and in the direction of Oberhausen on the other. In the southern direction, the A 45 offers another junction at the Westhofener Kreuz with the A 1, which leads from Bremen to the Cologne area. The most convenient highway exits are found on the A 45 in Dortmund-Eichlinghofen (Campus South) and on the B 1 / A 40 in Dortmund-Dorstfeld or Dortmund-Barop (Campus North). The university is signposted at both exits. The route from Campus South to Campus North is via Baroper Straße.

Arrival by train

The TU Dortmund has its own S-Bahn station ("Dortmund Universität") on the North Campus, where the Institute for Robot Research is also located. From there, the S-Bahn line S1 runs every 20 or 30 minutes to Dortmund main station and in the opposite direction to Düsseldorf main station via "Bahnhof Düsseldorf Flughafen". This means that the IRF can be reached directly from the cities of Bochum, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Duisburg.

From Dortmund city center, you can also get to the IRF by bus, subway or streetcar by taking the subway lines U41, U45, U47 or U49 from the main station to the "Stadtgarten" stop, from there take the U42 to the "An der Palmweide" stop and finally change to the buses 462, 445 or 447 to the "Dortmund Universität S" stop. Individual timetable information for local public transport is also available on the homepage of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr.

Arriving by plane

Dortmund has an airport that is connected to the most important destinations in Germany and Europe. There are regular flights to Berlin, Budapest, Dresden, Katowice, Krakow, Leipzig-Halle, London, Milan, Munich, Nuremberg, Paris, Prague, Rome, Stuttgart, Warsaw, Vienna and Zurich, for example. Many of these connections are offered by low-cost airlines at reasonable prices. To get from the airport to the campus, it is advisable to take the "Airport Express" to Dortmund Central Station, and then board the S-Bahn there(individual timetable). The journey time is 41 minutes. A wider range of international flight connections is offered by Düsseldorf Airport, about 60 kilometers away, which can be reached directly by S-Bahn from the university station and vice versa. However, it is usually faster to choose the connection to and from the airport via Dortmund's main train station. The airport is connected to the main station via the faster "Regionalexpress".
